Dafu New Materials | A Detailed Overview of Polyamide 12 (PA12) Film and Its Applications

PA12, also known as Nylon 12 or polydodecanolactam, is a high-performance engineering plastic. Thanks to its unique physical and chemical properties, it is widely used across multiple industries. This article provides an in-depth look at the key characteristics and application sectors of PA12.

Key Properties of PA12

  • Low Water Absorption: A well-known drawback of nylon products is high water absorption and poor dimensional stability. However, the increased methylene groups in PA12 significantly reduce the impact of hydrophilic groups. PA12 exhibits the lowest water absorption among all nylon products, maintaining excellent dimensional stability even under fluctuating humidity.
  • Thermal Stability: PA12 has a melting point of 172–178°C, fully meeting the operating temperature requirements for automotive fuel lines and air brake hoses.
  • Superior Mechanical Properties: PA12 delivers high impact resistance, outstanding low wear and low friction performance, and self-lubricating properties. It retains these properties even at extremely low temperatures down to -70°C.
  • Chemical Resistance: PA12 offers excellent or exceptional resistance to greases, oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, many solvents, and salt solutions.

Applications of PA12

  1. PA12 has the lowest brittleness temperature among nylons, reaching -70°C. As shown in Figure 1-1, compared with TPU elastomers, PA12 demonstrates minimal changes in elastic modulus with temperature fluctuations. It maintains good elasticity in low-temperature environments, making it ideal for surface films on sneaker outsoles.

  1. In addition to excellent low-temperature resistance, PA12 features outstanding low wear, low friction, and self-lubricating properties, making it an ideal material for ski board protective films.
  2. Automotive Industry: PA12 is used in manufacturing automotive piping systems, including multi-layer fuel lines and vacuum brake booster hoses.
  3. Daily Consumer Goods: With excellent fatigue resistance and no need for painting, PA12 is used for eyeglass frames.

Future Outlook for PA12

As a high-performance engineering plastic, PA12 plays an increasingly vital role in modern industry. Its unique physical and chemical properties drive extensive applications across automotive, consumer goods, 3D printing, and other sectors. With technological advancements and growing environmental awareness, the recycling and reuse of PA12 will become a key development direction in the future.
